David Douglas School District covers approximately 12 square miles in Portland. This area includes family homes apartments shopping centers and small businesses serving a diverse community with a population stretching over 57000. Since 1959 when the district began it has seen continuous growth. In addition there is a community swimming pool and community performing arts center are located on the high school site. Currently the district includes nine elementary schools guiding grades kindergarten through five three middle schools for grades six through eight one high school for grades 9-12 and one alternative school for grades 9-12. To assist with student achievement across the district many initiatives are in place such as 85 minutes daily of language arts and 85 minutes daily of math at the middle school level.
